On January 29th-31st, Ohio State PRSSA took 24 fortunate members to the Big Apple! Our goal of the trip was to strengthen alumni relations in the greater New York City area and gain an insight to post-grad as a PR practitioner. All of this was accomplished while having a lot of fun with a folded slice of NYC pizza in hand.
A Taste of the Agency Life
We toured a wide range of PR agencies ranging an advertising agency called Walrus to the top firm in the industry, Edelman. Each student received their schedule, curated by matching everyone with their preferences. They were responsible for arriving on time and at the correct location. This gave them a taste of the multiple forms of transportation that exist in the city; walking, Uber Pool or the old faithful New York subway. Each agency was very different from the one before and included insights into intern/entry-level life. It’s trips like these that truly will start to shape how they picture their future careers.
Mixing and Mingling
Monday evening, the students, along with other alumni who reside in the city, enjoyed a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres evening. This was hosted at the home of alumnus Jani Aronow Gerard and her husband. I enjoyed watching our members network in a more casual setting, which allowed everyone to share a laugh and enjoy. Definitely a much needed evening after a long day of Q & A’s.
New York State of Mind
My hope is that students gained a more positive outlook on the PR industry in New York City. Alumni and events in the Midwest constantly influence us, making New York seems unattainable or daunting. I want students to view this amazing city as a place they can start a career and THRIVE! Not only did we reach our goal of strengthening alumni relations on the East Coast but also we strengthened students’ desire to explore a career path outside their comfort zone.
Oh! ...and special thanks to our president, Emma Grubaugh, for this extremely successful event. With the success of this trip, we hope this becomes an Ohio State PRSSA tradition for students to come!
