As a recent graduate of The Ohio State University I have been stuck in this weird funk lately. I have lost all of the structure that I have very much enjoyed during my time at OSU. I spend my days job hunting, writing album reviews and working on becoming certified in certain social media analytic academies. Yet, it all still feels weird. There is no due date for any of this, no professor I can email to ask questions about this work, I just find myself trying to keep busy. I guess there are a few different things you should know about adjusting to life as a recent graduate of college.
First, APPLY APPLY APPLY!! If you do not have a job following graduating then your number one job is to apply for jobs, and nothing else. You need to look everywhere and you may not get your dream job at first but, do not let that get you down. Look in areas that you may not consider at first. Those random places could be the place that lets you get that foot in the door. The more applications that you fill out, the better chance you have to land your first job.
Secondly, keep busy. Once you graduate from school, you’ll obviously have a lot more free time and that can be a good and bad thing. It can be good because it can give you time to catch up on things you love to do, things you didn’t have time for when you had school work. It can be a bad thing because it can make you lazy. Once you lose the structure you can lose the drive you had during school. You can avoid getting complacent by keeping a routine, getting up at the same time, keeping busy with your hobbies, and of course applying.
Lastly, get involved with your alumni community. You just graduated from The Ohio State University, and with that comes one of the largest alumni networks in the country. Get involved with game day activities, events within the university, and even fun events outside of the university. You can do so much with Ohio State without even living in Ohio anymore. Ohio State is a diverse and amazing network, you can find a buckeye at any point in the world.
Life after college is weird, slow, and less organized. But I believe that keeping busy and organized will make the transition into the real world that much easier. It is not as hard as you may believe, just keep applying for jobs and stay busy. Life after college can be whatever you want it to be.
Scotty Michael recently graduated from Ohio State in December, 2018. I graduated with my bachelor of the arts, with main focuses in public relations and social media. In my spare time I watch tons of Cleveland sports. I also, listen to a ton of albums and I write reviews on the albums once I have finished them.
