Halloween costume inspiration: college edition

By: Audrey Goodstein

Halloween is right around the corner and that means it’s time to start planning your costume if you haven’t already! Halloween is many people's favorite time of the year with the fall weather finally in full effect, the pretty leaves, all the candy and especially wearing the coolest costume. Whether you’re going to a party, going out with friends or keeping it low-key, finding a costume that’s fun, creative and not too expensive is always the goal. At least for me.

Pop culture costumes are always popular, and there is lots of inspiration to work with. Characters from “Inside Out 2” are an easy and colorful group idea; Joy, Anxiety and Envy are all simple to put together with stuff you probably already have. Barbenheimer is also a good idea, and it is a fun in-between of cute and ironic. If you’re going for something a little fancier, the Bridgerton look is still trending.

Throwback costumes are always a good idea because people will recognize them. Bratz Dolls are an easy go-to, as well as Disney Channel characters. Kim Possible, Lizzie McGuire or one of the Cheetah Girls are all nostalgic without trying too hard. If you’re doing a group costume, the Scooby-Doo crew is a classic and easy to pull together.

If you’re looking for a costume at the last minute, there are plenty of options that still work. The “Error 404: Costume Not Found” t-shirt joke is simple but gets a laugh. You could also be a “Ceiling Fan” by wearing a shirt that says, “Go Ceilings!” and carrying pom-poms. A sheet ghost with sunglasses is another classic that somehow never gets old. Or, going as a cowboy or cowgirl, wearing jeans, flannel and boots is simple.

If you want to put more effort in, aesthetic costumes are a fun way to show off without going overboard. A dark fairy or vampire can look cool. All you have to wear is black clothes, silver jewelry and dramatic makeup. A celestial or goddess look with metallics, and flowy fabric also looks great without needing much preparation.

Halloween shouldn't be overwhelming. However, I know the feeling because it is for me. The best costumes are usually the ones that are last minute, yet creative and funny or just feel like you. Whether you do something spooky, lazy or totally over the top, just have fun with it at the end of the day!
