These Dishes Deserve a Spot in your Camera Roll

By: Charley Lirtzman

We’ve all been there: the food hits the table, and before anyone takes a bite, someone has to get the picture. As someone who is always taking pictures of my food, I love when restaurants make the presentation just as memorable as the meal itself. Whether it’s an over the top presentation, a colorful cocktail or a dessert served with a little extra drama, some dishes are almost too photogenic to eat. Here are five dishes that deserve a spot in your camera roll before you dig in.

The Pearl

The Pearl definitely has some of those dishes I would have to take a picture of before anyone touched it. Their seafood tower stands out as soon as it arrives at the table, as it comes complete with oysters, shrimp, crab cocktail and tuna crudo. Between the colorful presentation and ocean-inspired details, this is exactly the kind of dish that makes me understand why our phones always eat first.

This Otoro Tatare is one of those dishes I would need to stare at for a few seconds before even thinking about taking a bite. It comes with caviar, duck egg and chive, and is served on top of a crystal clear block of ice, making the presentation just as impressive as the dish itself. I love when a restaurant turns the food into part of the overall experience, and this dish definitely brings one of those moments.

Pizzeria Portofino

Who said accessories are just for your outfit? The Pizzeria Portofino Purse immediately caught my attention because it is served in a purse-shaped glass that practically begs to be photographed. Filled with a refreshing citrus spritz and enjoyed right along the Chicago River, this is the kind of drink that is just as fun to look at as it is to sip. I know I would definitely need a picture of this one before I take my first sip.

RPM Steak

Some Desserts deserve a grand finale, and RPM Steak’s Baked Alaska definitely fits that description. Finished with warm chocolate sauce and flambeed table-side, the flames alone would immediately get my attention. Between the toasted meringue, decadent layers and table-side presentation, this dessert turns somethings as simple as ordering at a restaurant into a whole experience.

From seafood towers to flaming desserts, these dishes prove that sometimes presentation really is part of the experience. So next time one of these lands on your table, don’t feel bad about making everyone wait a few extra seconds. After all, your phone eats first.
