Best Study Spots Around Ohio State’s Columbus Campus

By: Gwyneth Cable

When studying on campus, your mind probably immediately goes to libraries. While Ohio State does have numerous libraries scattered about, one of the great qualities of the Columbus campus is the immense size, allowing for dozens of diverse buildings and even outdoor areas. No matter where you’re at on campus, there’s sure to be an aesthetic place nearby for you to lock in.

Thompson Library

For those who do benefit from the quiet calm of libraries, Thompson is the place for you. Specifically, I’d recommend The Grand Reading Room, located on the second floor, or the very top floor. Both of these are completely silent study spaces and offer gorgeous views. The Grand Reading Room has long tables, floor-to-ceiling windows and a massive winged statue. The eleventh floor provides plush couches and chairs, along with the ability to overlook all of campus.

Mirror Lake

If you’re looking for some sunshine and fresh air, Mirror Lake is the perfect spot on campus. From red, wavy lounge chairs to park benches, there are seating options placed all around the perimeter of the lake. There are spots perfect for setting up a hammock, sitting on the steps of Browning Amphitheater or heading to the patio of The Varsity Club. From any spot, Mirror Lake can serve as the perfect background for your study session.

The Journalism Building

Home to more than just journalism classes, the Journalism Building hosts many general education and language classes. Since it’s likely you’ll have at least one class here, it’s pretty convenient that it has one of the best lounges on campus. Equipped with tables, armchairs and couches, it’s one of my favorite places to do some work during the day when I have gaps in my schedule. They also have unique, pod-like chairs with small tables, footrests and walls, really making you feel like you’re in your own private space.

Enarson Classroom Building

Located just across from the Journalism Building, Enarson is another great spot to go if you prefer to study in classroom buildings. If you’re waiting for a class to start and want to cram in a few extra minutes of work, lots of benches line the hallways. One of the best spots within the building is the third-floor lounge. Again, lots of seating options and natural light from the large windows. The basement has a row of computers set up along a long table against one wall, along with a few round tables and high-top chairs.

Just outside of Enarson Classroom Building are plenty more study spots. Outdoor tables are spread around and wooden benches line plant boxes throughout the courtyard. If you’re looking for an unconventional seat, you can even choose to work while sitting on one of the large teal numbers that make up the Garden of Constants.

Knowlton Hall

A structure that truly stands out against other buildings on campus, Knowlton Hall is the university’s space for architecture majors. However, you don’t need to be a part of this major to enjoy Knowlton’s library or KSA Cafe. Near the library is a door to the only rooftop garden on campus. Studying in the garden is another isolated spot on campus that really makes it hard to believe you’re still in the city of Columbus.

Leave your comfort zone and explore more than just Ohio State’s libraries, or try to find a new spot within the libraries to study. Regardless of your major, check out all the different classroom buildings to see what you can find. Make the most of your time on campus and live out your aesthetic studying dreams.
